- Editorial
Increases Momentum for Prevention
|
A recent editorial in the Indianapolis Star endorses
the principles of Exercise is Medicine, strongly reinforcing the power of physical
activity for disease prevention and cost savings.
Supporters of EIM can have a profound effect in their communities
by contacting local media to:
- Write opinion letters and guest columns.
- Propose story
ideas, offer source materials and provide expert analysis.
- Correct misinformation and respond to articles or discussions.
- Offer to visit
TV or radio programs to talk about physical activity and exercise.
- Request a meeting with the editorial
board of your local newspaper. Resulting editorials, like that in the Indianapolis
Star linked above, are considered the official position of the publication and
carry weight beyond that of a typical letter to the editor. The Web site of Physicians
for Human Rights has a good primer on how to set up and conduct an editorial board meeting.
Please look for opportunities to share
this message with your professional contacts, friends and acquaintances. Visit
www.exerciseismedicine.org for additional resources,
and download the EIM Action and Promotion Guide for tips on working with the media. For media contact information
or interview tips, contact publicinfo@acsm.org or (317) 637-9200, ext. 117. |
- Task Force Member Presents Exercise
Prescription Conference
|
Physicians, nurses, health and wellness professionals, and other
allied health care providers are invited to attend “Active Doctor, Active Patients,” a three-day
interactive conference aimed to promote physical activity and exercise prescription.
EIM task force member Edward M. Phillips, M.D., created the conference, to be
held Nov. 13-15 in Boston, as a part of his role
with The Institute of Lifestyle Medicine at Harvard Medical
School.
EIM task force chairman Robert Sallis,
M.D., FACSM, will be featured as a distinguished speaker during the conference’s
leadership summit, “Exercise Prescription: A Call to Action,” in addition
to experts from the government, insurance, fitness, and medicine fields. Other
conference highlights include interactive exercise workshops and lectures on the
physical activity/exercise, nutrition, stress management, and coaching psychology.
