In 2015, the European Initiative for Exercise is Medicine® (EIM) was founded as an independent non-profit non-governmental organization as the EIM Center for Europe, in close collaboration with the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM).
The Mission: It was felt that more should be done to address physical inactivity and to promote exercise in health care settings, taking the European perspective into account. To facilitate this, our aim is to make physical activity and exercise a standard in European disease prevention and the medical treatment paradigm. We feel that physical activity should be considered by all health care providers as a vital sign in every patient visit and that patients should be effectively counselled for and referred to physical activity according to their health needs, thus leading to overall improvement of the public health status of Europe and to long-term reduction use of health care and of societal costs.
The 8th Meeting: One of the ways to deliver the mission is through the organization of an annual conference. This conference has been circulating across European cities. This year, for our 8th annual meeting, Amsterdam will host the meeting on September 20 and 21, 2019. The meeting will be held in the heart of the old downtown city centre next to the Amsterdam Central Railway Station, which is a convenient 15-minute train ride from the Amsterdam Schiphol Airport. The conference venue is the prize-winning Public Library Amsterdam (OBA).
The Program: An exciting program has been created that covers various content matter regarding EIM (youth, specific patient groups, specific settings), as well as specific topics of interest such as the ethics of EIM, the role of big data and modern technology and marketing EIM. We have a number of excellent local speakers (Riper, Dekker, Chin A paw, Klaase, De Groot, De Bree and de Bruijne), but also internationally well-known speakers (i.e. Philip Treleaven (UK), Kathryn Schmitz (USA), Mats Borjesson (Sweden), Ulf Ekelund (Norway), Esther van Sluijs (UK), Claus Reinsberger (Germany), Ugo Giordano (Italy), Kathleen Martin-Ginis (Canada) and James Rimmer (USA)).
Invitation to submit free posters: We will be accepting posters for a free poster presentation. Submit your poster abstract by June 27, and get the chance of becoming an active part of the conference.
