The Exercise is Medicine® On Campus @ Camosun club was formed in 2015; it is part of the Centre for Sport & Exercise Education at Camosun College in Victoria. The EIMC @Camosun club is led by 4th year students in the Bachelor of Sport & Fitness Leadership – Exercise & Wellness degree program at Camosun.
Over the past year, the EIMC on Campus club has developed an evidence-based exercise program for people with diabetes. The initial community-based program to be launched is the Diabetes Exercise and Education Program (DEEP); it is being co-sponsored by the Pacific Institute of Sport Excellence and Centre for Sport & Exercise Education. This program provides six weeks of supervised exercise classes to people with pre, type I and type II diabetes; along with short educational sessions on how to manage diabetic specific situations and exercise. This initial pilot project is currently running at capacity with ten full time participants; and is being reviewed as a tremendously valuable experience by both the participants and the student leaders.
Camosun faculty and students are creating the Exercise is Medicine legacy in Victoria for the future. Future plans include programming such as the DEEP program and offering programs for other chronic illnesses such as arthritis and patients who suffer from it.
