Exercise is Medicine Canada @ UOttawa is an initiative established in 2014 through close collaboration between the Faculties of Kinesiology and Medicine. Through a range of different activities and workshops taking place during the academic year, EIMC @ uOttawa seeks to promote physical activity as a means to enhance physical and mental health within the of students population and encourage discussion among future health professionals on the use of exercise for the prevention and treatment of many diseases conditions.
EIMC @ uOttawa primarily uses its Facebook page (Exercise is Medicine Canada at uOttawa) to promote initiatives. Weekly “Wellness Wednesdays” motivational posts remind individuals to be active.
Dodgeball tournaments, Bubble Soccer and physical activity workshops are examples of successful events organized by EIMC @ uOttawa since its launch, attracting up to 100 students from various faculties across the campus. EIMC @ uOttawa is in the process of implementing a peer-to-peer Physical Activity Counselling program, which will be open to insufficiently active students who are looking to increase their physical activity levels and improve their overall physical and mental health. This peer-to-peer service will be offered for free by upper-level Human Kinetics students trained in physical activity counselling and behaviour change.
The club plans to build on these successful events and services by continuing to lead creative physical activity opportunities for students coming from a wide range of disciplines.
