Exercise Program Directory

Cancer Directory Program

The Moving Through Cancer program was developed to help patients, families, health care providers and others find hospital and community-based exercise programs in their communities. Being active throughout the cancer journey and beyond can improve one's ability to handle and stick with cancer treatments, help the patient feel better and may even prevent cancer recurrence.

Please enter your search information below to discover what programs are available in a specific area. The programs are divided into those that are delivered in a medical setting, in a community-based facility, or can be done at home. Contact information is provided so that you can reach out to a program coordinator to learn more.

Click here if you wish to add a program to the directory.
If you wish to edit your program, please contact Kathryn Schmitz at [email protected].

The goal of Moving Through Cancer is to provide information and promote awareness of physical activity, health, and wellness, and the benefits of physical activity in the prevention and treatment of disease. The programs and service providers identified in the Moving Through Cancer directory have no source, sponsorship or other affiliation with the American College of Sports Medicine (“ACSM”) nor have they been evaluated by ACSM. Individuals should consult and follow the advice of oncology professionals before commencing any treatment plan, including any program or other service offered by a provider identified in the directory. If you are a listed service provider and wish to be removed from the directory, or if you otherwise wish to provide information that advances the goal of Moving Through Cancer, please contact ACSM at [email protected].

Program Description
The WVU PT faculty practice oncology program works closely with the WVU Cancer Institute regarding the mobility needs of all types of patients at any stage of the cancer journey. Clients are individually assessed for needs and programs are developed ranging from traditional physical therapy to ongoing recovery and wellness. The program works very closely with the WVU Human Performance Lab, the clinical exercise assessment and training program of the WVU Division of Exercise Physiology. Clients may be seen for a single visit, instructed in home exercises, referred to mobility programs in their home communities (with specialist recommendations regarding exercise), or they may exercise in the Human Performance Lab for as long as they like. Having an oncology speciallist running the program also allows clients access to exercise-related research programs and special issues such as non-pharmacologic pain management and supportive/palliative care.

Your Next Move Breast Cancer Rehab

Program Type
Home Based
Program Description
Your Next Move Breast Cancer Rehab was created to fill the gap that the body goes through between treatment and getting back to being active. Patients know that they are 'supposed to' exercise but there's a big gap between post chemo nausea and fatigue and post surgery pain & tightness and the 150 minutes of recommended exercise that breast cancer patients are being told to perform. Your Next Move is where you start. Start with mobility, with range of motion, with getting to know how your body is moving, working, responding. This is where breast cancer patients start to not only support the healing of their body but to feel comfortable, safe, secure, and empowered that they can progress back to an active life. Too many patients - as documented in numerous research articles - live with pain and tightness for years after treatment. This is due to the lack of properly administered mobility exercises as the first step post surgery/post treatment. Mobility is always the first step after trauma to the body. We see this for hip surgery, knee replacements, heart surgeries, but for some reason cancer patients are not being provided with the mobility exercises they need - unless you count the little pamphlet. Your Next Move was created to make the difference in gaining back an active life and creating your Best Potential after diagnosis.
