As of 2012, about half of all adults in the United States (117 million people) have been diagnosed with at least one chronic health condition like diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, cancer or obesity. Lack of physical activity contributes to the problem. As chronic diseases become more and more prevalent, the benefits of regular exercise and physical activity to treat and prevent these conditions cannot be overlooked. EIM created the "Prescription for Health Series" to provide basic guidelines on exercise for individuals with chronic diseases. Each "Rx" highlights a common chronic condition and corresponding exercise prescription.
